What is TMJ?

TMJ is an abbreviation for temporomandibular joint disorders. Your temporomandibular joints are located on either side of your face and attach your lower jaw to your skull. They act as hinges and give you the ability to open and close your mouth.

Unfortunately, issues with these joints can occur. Temporomandibular joint disorders tend to cause:

• Jaw pain and tenderness
• Increased pain intensity while chewing
• Pain around the ears
• Jaw locking open or closed
• Clicking sounds or sensations while opening or closing your mouth
• Grating sounds or sensations while opening or closing your mouth

Occlusal appliances

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and muscle relaxants are two of several medication options that might provide some relief from your TMJ symptoms.

In very serious cases of TMJ, Dr. Darvishian might refer you to a specialist for TMJ surgery.
