When Sudden Tooth Pain Requires Immediate Treatment

Not all dental problems require urgent care. But if you’re experiencing severe pain or have a severely infected tooth, more in-depth treatment may be needed to protect your dental and oral health.

Keep reading to learn more about when an emergency root canal is required and what happens during this procedure.

When an Emergency Root Canal Is Required

Commonly, signs of infection and decay can be detected during a routine visit to your dentist. If you’re experiencing mild discomfort, a root canal can usually be scheduled at a future date.

But, there are some instances that require an emergency root canal, including:

These symptoms are serious and should be treated immediately.

What Happens During This Procedure?

A root canal treats damage or an infection that’s located within the soft tissue inside of the tooth, known as the pulp. During this treatment, your dentist will first numb the area to minimize any pain or discomfort.

Then, the damage and / or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned. The empty space is then filled to prevent future infection.

Once the tooth has been cleaned and filled, your dentist will seal the tooth. Depending on the extent of the damage, a crown may be placed to restore the tooth’s function and strength.

When Will I Have Relief From Tooth Pain?

After your root canal, you should expect to experience some soreness, as the procedure can irritate the nerves and gum tissue in the treatment area. Cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers can help.

Within a few days, your tooth should feel much better.
